Borders

Tom and Louis Borders opened an 800-square-foot used bookstore in the academic community of Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1971 and called it Borders Book Shop. Over the coming years Tom and Louis expanded their operation, opening new stores in new markets.  In 1992, Kmart (US) acquired Borders and formed the Borders-Walden Group.  The Borders-Walden Group was renamed Borders Group, Inc. and goes public through an initial public offering in 1995.

In November 1997, Borders opened its first Singapore store at Wheelock Place, Orchard Road.  This was followed in October 1998 with the opening of Borders' first store in Australia at the Jam Factory, Chapel Street, South Yarra, Victoria.  A year later Borders opened its first New Zealand store in Queen Street, Auckland.  Over the next eight years Borders continued to open new stores in new markets across Australia, New Zealand & Singapore.

In June 2008, REDgroup Retail acquired Borders’ Australian, New Zealand and Singapore operations.
