The Whitcoulls chain comprises 65 stores, 40 of which are located in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. In each of these cities Whitcoulls operates a major flagship store. Whitcoulls stores are located in prime retail areas.
Whitcoulls is an iconic New Zealand brand and has over a century of history in New Zealand that dates back to the establishment of Whitcombe and Tombs in 1888 and Coulls Somerville Wilkie in 1871.
Whitcoulls sells books, stationery, DVDs, newspapers & magazines. Books account for a significant proportion of total sales and Whitcoulls holds the leading position in the New Zealand book retail market. Whitcoulls also has a strong stationery presence and sells a range of stationery, games, cards and gift wrap. Whitcoulls is still estimated to have the largest market share of the personal stationery market in New Zealand. Whitcoulls also sells a full range of DVDs and entertainment software and has the second largest share of the New Zealand DVD market. Whitcoulls sells newspapers and magazines and although they are a relatively small proportion of total sales they generate significant foot traffic.
